ELW2 — the command vehicle in 3D.
Command vehicles (ELW2) are highly complex special-purpose vehicles — communications hub, mobile command centre, tactical workspace for operations leadership. For the Wittmund fire brigade we captured the entire ELW2 fully in 3D, so that training, maintenance and later replacement procurement can rest on a solid data foundation.
A specialty vehicle as a digital twin.
A modern ELW2 contains dozens of permanently installed radios, screens, power supplies, data networks and ergonomically optimised workstations. When the vehicle has to be replaced after 15–20 years, every fitting needs to be documented exactly so the successor can be built like-for-like. The hunt for plans, wiring diagrams and equipment inventories begins — and often ends in frustration.
We captured the ELW2 completely in a single session: exterior shell, interior, every control, every device, all visible wiring. The capture serves three purposes: training new crew, maintenance planning against as-built dimensions and — long-term — procurement specification for the successor vehicle.
At a glance.
Our approach in 4 stages.
Interior LiDAR
Matterport Pro scanner positioned compactly inside the vehicle interior. Multiple scan stations cover every workstation and equipment cabinet.
Detail-Photos
High-resolution photo passes of device front panels, labels and wiring diagrams — embedded into the tour as hotspots.
Exterior capture
Photogrammetric capture of the vehicle's outer shell including superstructure and emergency-light system.
Handover
Walkable web tour with equipment annotations plus a Matterpak data package for archiving and VR training.
For training new crew members the digital ELW2 is a real game-changer — they get to know the cockpit before they ever stand in front of the real vehicle.
